About Gold Vermeil Jewellery

Gold Vermeil Explained

Gold vermeil (pronounced ver-may) combines the the best of both worlds: the elegance and allure of gold with the affordability of sterling silver. It is crafted by electroplating a layer of gold (at least 2.5 microns thick with a minimum gold purity of 10 karats) onto a sterling silver base. The technique orginiates from France in the 19th century, where it was commonly used for crafting ornate brooches, necklaces, and other intricate pieces.

Gold Vermeil vs Gold Plated

At Otiumberg we choose to craft our statement pieces in gold vermeil rather than gold plating them. While the finished may look similar, there are distinct differences between them in terms of materials, thickness, and longevity. Here's a breakdown of the main differences:

1. Base Metal: Gold vermeil jewellery has a sterling silver base. Sterling silver is an alloy composed of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. Gold-plated jewellery, on the other hand, can have various poor quality base metals, such as brass, copper, or nickel.

2. Gold Layer Thickness: Gold vermeil jewellery has a thicker layer of gold than gold-plated jewellery. To be considered vermeil, the gold layer must be at least 2.5 microns (approximately 0.1 mils) thick. Gold-plated jewellery typically has a thinner layer of gold, ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 microns.

3. Gold Purity: Vermeil jewellery requires a minimum gold purity of 10 karats. Gold-plated jewellery can have varying gold purity levels, ranging from 10 karats to 24 karats.

4. Durability and Longevity: Gold vermeil jewellery is more durable and longer-lasting. The thicker gold layer on vermeil jewellery provides better protection against wear and tarnishing.

How to care for your gold vermeil jewellery

Caring for gold vermeil jewellery properly can help maintain its beautiful appearance and prolong its lifespan.

When not wearing your gold vermeil jewellery make sure to store it in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. We recommend storing your pieces in our Otiumberg cloth pouches. This helps prevent exposure to moisture and reduces the risk of tarnishing or scratching.

Keep your gold vermeil jewellery away from chemicals that can damage the gold layer. This includes substances like perfumes. Chemicals can cause the gold to tarnish or wear off over time. It's best to apply perfumes and other beauty products before putting on your jewellery.

To clean your pieces use a soft, non-abrasive cloth to gently wipe the jewellery. Avoid using harsh or abrasive cleaners, as they can damage the gold layer. If necessary, you can dampen the cloth with a small amount of mild soap diluted in warm water, but make sure to rinse and dry the jewellery thoroughly afterward.
