We’re a small voice in a huge industry but we always try to keep our finger on the pulse of responsible developments. Whilst we recognise the benefits of recycled gold, we have become aware that it is by no means the perfect solution to addressing conditions within the mining industry itself. 

The extraction of gold can lead to destruction of natural habitats, water pollution, and exploitation of workers. SMO is a traceability system that ensures that the gold produced by a specific mine can be traced from the point of extraction to the final product. This system provides transparency and accountability, allowing consumers to make informed decisions about the products they buy. SMO Responsibly Sourced Gold goes a step further by ensuring that the gold is extracted using environmentally and socially responsible practices only.

What are the benefits of SMO gold?

Additionally, the World Gold Council has launched the Responsible Gold Mining Principles, which provide a framework for responsible gold mining practices.

SMO Gold at Otiumberg

We introduced SMO (Single Mine Origin) gold into the Otiumberg Collection in 2023, and it now features across a growing edit of our solid gold designs.

The collection includes our Domino huggies, necklaces and rings, handcrafted in solid 9kt gold and set with responsibly sourced gemstones and lab-grown diamonds. Alongside them sit timeless personalised keepsakes, including our engravable Large Solid Gold Disc and Diamond Initial Pendant.

All our SMO jewellery can be traced back to the Bellevue Mine in Western Australia's Goldfields. In 2025, Bellevue became the first gold mine in the world to reach net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions, powered by its own solar, wind and battery system. It's a step towards more responsible gold and a more transparent industry. As a B Corp, it is a standard we are proud to hold.
