MATERIALS & CARE

At Otiumberg, we work exclusively with high-quality, responsibly sourced materials designed to be worn and loved every day. Below is a guide to help you understand the unique properties of each metal we craft with, alongside clear advice on how to care for your jewellery so it lasts for years to come.

Our Materials

14-Karat Gold

With a higher solid gold content of 58.5%, 14-karat gold balances richness of colour with durability. It is a fine choice for those seeking pieces with a slightly deeper gold hue that stand up well to daily wear.

9-Karat Gold

Composed of 37.5% pure gold blended with other strengthening alloys such as copper and sterling silver, 9-karat gold is durable and perfect for everyday wear. Its subtle, warm tone offers an understated luxury and excellent resilience for modern living.

Gold Vermeil

Gold vermeil (pronounced ‘ver-may’) is crafted from a thick layer of 14-karat gold (minimum 2.5 microns) layered over sterling silver. It offers the luxurious look of solid gold at a more accessible price point. It requires more mindful care to maintain its lustre over time.

How to Wear & Care For Your Jewellery

9-Karat & 14-Karat Gold

Wear: These metals are robust and can be worn daily with confidence.

Clean: Gently soak in warm water with a few drops of our cleaning solution, pat dry with the microfiber cloth and then polish with gold polishing cloth to restore shine.

Take Caution: Although resilient, avoid harsh chemicals such as chlorine, which can weaken gold alloys over time.

Solid Gold Jewellery

Diamonds & Gemstones

Wear: Diamonds are highly durable, but many gemstones are delicate. Remove jewellery before showering, exercising, or applying lotions and perfumes. Store away from sunlight to avoid fading.

Clean: Soak in warm water with cleaning solution, gently brush with bamboo toothbrush, rinse, pat dry with microfiber cloth, and polish with gold cloth for shine.

Take Caution: Always store your pieces separately—ideally in the Otiumberg pouch—to prevent contact and potential damage.

Gold Vermeil

Wear: Handle with particular care to prolong the life of the gold layer. Avoid contact with water, perfumes, lotions, and sweat which may accelerate fading. Remove when exercising, bathing, or sleeping.

Clean: Use a soft, dry gold cloth to gently buff and restore shine. Do not use chemical cleaners, polishing cloths designed for silver, or abrasive materials as these can strip the gold layer.

Take Caution: Gold vermeil is more delicate than solid gold; over time and with exposure to friction or liquids, the gold finish can fade to reveal the silver beneath. Treat it as you would silk or leather — with consideration.

Please note that we offer a re-plating service for gold vermeil pieces out of warranty. This service recoats the jewellery in a layer of gold, restoring it to its original glory. Please refer to Otiumberg Concierge for more details.

Sterling Silver

Wear: Sterling silver benefits from regular wear, which helps slow tarnishing.

Clean: Use a dedicated microfiber cloth to remove oxidation and restore brilliance. For a deeper clean, use lukewarm water with a few drops of our cleaning solution and apply a soft brush, then dry thoroughly.

Take Caution: Store away from moisture and air when not in use to prevent tarnish.

Care Kit & Jewellery Boxes

To help you care for your pieces, we offer the Otiumberg Jewellery Care Kit, which includes:

A gentle jewellery cleaning solution
A soft-bristle bamboo brush
A gold polishing & Microfiber cloth

This kit is suitable for use across our solid gold, sterling silver, and old vermeil pieces. For vermeil, we recommend using only the dry clothes to gently maintain shine and avoiding the liquid solution.

Always store pieces individually in a soft-lined jewellery pouch to prevent tangling, scratching, or tarnishing. The Otiumberg pouches that come with our contemporary orders are perfect for this use. Avoid storing jewellery in packaging, paper boxes or cheap jewellery cases which may have Sulphur in the glue that can accelerate tarnishing overtime.

We advise to:

Keep items away from direct sunlight, damp conditions, and extreme heat.

For gold vermeil and silver, airtight containers or anti-tarnish strips can help minimise oxidation.

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING

At Otiumberg, we take care to ensure that our packaging reflects our commitment to sustainability. Our carrier bags are made from FSC-certified paper with brown cotton handles; simply remove the handles before placing the bag into paper recycling. The jewellery pouches inside are crafted from ramie, a natural, renewable, and biodegradable fibre from the nettle family, making them both eco-friendly and perfect for keeping your jewellery safe on the go. Finally, our packaging boxes are made from virgin FSC-certified paper, free from plastic, and fully recyclable, just like our bags.

Warranty & Repairs

We include a two year warranty on our 14-karat pieces and a one year warranty on all other pieces- we would be happy to repair any damages within this period. Our warranty does not cover general wear & tear or lost stones. We are also unable to return any items once they have been altered by a third party jeweller.

While we’re happy to cover the cost of the repair, if your piece has a missing or damaged stone, we do not cover the cost of replacing the stone. Reach out to us and we’ll send you a quote for a replacement stone.

Over time, plated gold vermeil can fade. This may vary depending on how you look after your jewellery. We offer a re-plating service at a nominal charge to restore your piece to new. It's simple and quick, ensuring that you are able to keep your gold vermeil piece looking perfect year after year.
